On September 7, 2005 a group of twenty-four faculty members from
the University of Virginia, School of Architecture sent an open
letter to the University Board of Visitors, the University Administration
and the University Community that raised questions about the future
of Jeffersonian architectural ideals on the University Grounds.
This letter was also released as a full-page advertisement in the
Cavalier Daily. The themes in the letter were developed through
a series of conversations between concerned faculty during the summer
of 2005. It outlines the growing and fundamental break between what
is valued and taught in the School of Architecture and how architectural
themes are treated on Grounds. Some have reacted to this letter
by suggesting that it is simply a disagreement about style. This
web site is intended to share the open letter, additional texts
related to its varied themes, and responses from students, alumni
and professionals. It is intended to initiate a long overdue dialogue
regarding a place that we value: the Grounds of the University of
Virginia.
